3D printing first started in the Late 1980’s. I first heard about 3D printing in 2008 when MakerBot was formed. I was intrigued by this new technology but was turned off by the initial cost of these machines. So now the only thing I could do was wait and wait and wait some more.

This brings us to present day, when I decided it was time to jump right in. Even though I kept hearing that 3D printing is dead, I had some great ideas of what I wanted to make and prove people wrong. I did my research on the internet and settled on the Creality CR-10S Pro. I liked that it had a build plate of 300x300x400 mm and cost under $800. And on February 19, 2019, I bought my first 3D printer.

The assembly out of the box was the easiest part, then came all the problems which I didn’t anticipate. The most common and most important thing was the prints not sticking to the bed. I again had to research the internet to try and solve this problem. I tried blue painter’s tape and glue stick. This didn’t work for me. I then bought some mirror tiles from the hardware store and used Aqua Net hair spray and this worked best for me. The prints stuck to the glass great and when the bed cooled down, the prints just came off with little effort.

I had to work through other problems like making a dry box for the filament. The filament can’t get too wet or it will mess up the prints. I also had leveling and software update problems. I almost gave up, but I persevered. I eventually worked through all the initial headaches to where I am now. I feel confident enough now to start producing my ideas.

One final note: it’s not about making money, because you can’t make a lot of money 3D printing products. It just takes too long to print. When I look at my lithophanes, it fills me with joy and pleasure. It’s this feeling I want to bring to everyone with your own lithophanes.
